Shell Eco Marathon Asia 2023

Development of an Electric Vehicle Prototype and Research on Telemetry System

Project Background

The Shell Eco-marathon Electric Vehicle Prototype Competition challenges student teams to design, build, and test energy-efficient battery-electric vehicles. The goal is to maximize energy efficiency, with performance measured in watt-hours per kilometer (Wh/km) rather than speed. Prototype vehicles are lightweight, aerodynamic, and optimized for minimal energy consumption. Teams must comply with strict safety and technical regulations while applying real-world engineering skills in vehicle design, electrical systems, and aerodynamics. The competition takes place globally, with winners determined by energy efficiency.

Electrical and Programming Department Project Objectives

  • Research on a telemetry system that able to automate a process that collects measurements and data from remote or inaccessible points and transmits them to receiving device for monitoring, display and recording.
  • The telemetry system must able to provide data of Electric Vehicle (EV) remotely from a race track such as velocity, acceleration, power consumption and battery capacity to the engineers and the EV team in the control room by using LoRa, a wireless technology widely acknowledged for its ability to send small amount of data over wide distances.
  • Assist other departments in fabricating the electric vehicle.
